Our charity work with Out of the Blue Ltd.
Our company, Out of the Blue (www.outoftheblue.uk.com;) donated all costs involved in publishing The Captain’s Cabin book to raise funds for the transformational Jamie’s Farm charity (have a look at their website: www.jamiesfarm.org.uk; ) which has hosted over 16,000 disadvantaged children on its six working farms. Together with sales and donations the book has raised over £47,000 towards the construction of two Farmers’ Cabins on the Jamie’s Farm Monmouth farm. These two cabins (designed pro-bono by Roderick James) are now available to rent via Airbnb to raise funds for the charity.
Out of the Blue has also donated substantial sums to set up a new charitable project in Rwanda which builds on my family links with the country. We have designed (also pro-bono by Roderick James) four lodges very close to the gorillas in the Virunga Mountains and the Dian Fossey Campus. ALL profits from short-term letting will be used to help local people to set up new businesses. We have raised over $300,000 so far and have purchased the site and started construction.
It's an interesting concept as instead of donations just supporting someone for a year, or underwriting one capital expense or routine expenditure, every donation continues to give in perpetuity through the letting income from the lodges, as well as providing employment for many, many people.
